Twenty-two affirmations for learning something new — for the beginner stage, which is the part most people quit in.

Learning as an adult is uncomfortable for a reason nobody warns you about: you already know what competent looks like, so you can measure exactly how far off you are. Children cannot do that, which is most of why they learn so freely.

These twenty-two affirmations are for tolerating that gap. They are about mistakes, patience and staying a beginner long enough to stop being one.

Staying in the beginner stage on purpose

The first weeks are the worst ratio of effort to visible progress you will ever get at the thing. Knowing that in advance turns "I am bad at this" into "I am at the part where everyone is bad at this", which is survivable.

Make mistakes the metric. A session where nothing went wrong was a session spent inside what you can already do, and it taught you less than the messy one before it.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old to learn something new?

Adults learn more slowly in some narrow respects and considerably faster in others, because they have more to connect new material to. The real obstacle is usually tolerance for being visibly bad at something, not capacity.

How do I stay motivated past the first few weeks?

Shorten the feedback loop. Something you can do badly but completely — a whole short piece, a whole small dish, a whole conversation — beats drilling components with no visible result.

What if I keep making the same mistake?

Repeating a mistake usually means the practice is too fast rather than that you are not trying. Slowing down until it is correct, then speeding up, fixes more than repetition does.

Should I learn one thing at a time?

Generally yes, at least at the start. Two new skills at once halves the practice each gets, and the first weeks are exactly when frequency matters most.
