Ten affirmations for public speaking — for the minutes before you stand up, when your voice needs to be steadier than your pulse.

Almost nobody is afraid of talking. What people are afraid of is being watched while they talk. That is why public speaking nerves hit hardest in the silence just before you begin, and usually settle about thirty seconds in.

These ten affirmations are for that silence. They are not about being a brilliant speaker. They are about remembering that you have something to say and a right to the room's attention while you say it.

Getting through the first thirty seconds

Your voice follows your breath, so the affirmation is doing two jobs: it gives your mind a sentence to hold, and it forces a longer exhale. Say one on the way to the front and let the last word land as you turn around.

Then give yourself an easy opening — a fact, a name, a thank-you. The goal of the first line is not to impress anyone. It is to hear your own voice fill the space once, so the rest of your body believes it can.

Frequently asked questions

What should I say right before I go on stage?

One line, repeated, tied to your breathing — not a pep talk. "I am brave enough to use my voice" said three times slowly does more than a paragraph, because you are trying to lower your heart rate, not win an argument with yourself.

Will affirmations stop my voice from shaking?

They help, indirectly. A shaking voice is usually shallow breathing, and repeating a sentence on a long exhale is a breathing exercise wearing different clothes. Practising the first two lines of your talk out loud does the rest.

Is it normal to be this nervous about speaking?

It is close to universal — surveys routinely put public speaking near the top of everyday fears. The nerves are not evidence that something is wrong with you or with your talk.

Can I use these for a presentation at work?

Yes. A meeting-room presentation is the same problem in a smaller room, and often a harder one because the audience is people who will still be there tomorrow. The affirmations about deserving space are the ones that tend to help most at work.
