Ten affirmations for sobriety — one day at a time, for the craving that peaks and passes and the strength you already have.

Sobriety is not one decision. It is the same decision made again at six in the evening, at a wedding, on a bad Tuesday, in a supermarket aisle. The strength required is not dramatic; it is repetitive, which is much harder.

These ten affirmations are for the repeat. They are short on purpose — a craving does not leave room for a paragraph — and they all say a version of the same thing: this is loud, and you are bigger than it.

Riding out a craving

Say the line and then start a clock. Cravings rise and fall; most peak within twenty minutes and pass whether you feed them or not. Knowing they are time-limited changes them from a verdict into weather.

Have something physical ready for that twenty minutes — a walk, a call, a cold drink, a message to the person who knows. The affirmation is the first move, not the whole plan, and sobriety held alone is much heavier than sobriety held with one other person.

Frequently asked questions

Do affirmations help with sobriety?

As one tool among several, yes — they give you something to say in the twenty minutes a craving takes to pass. They are not a treatment programme, and serious dependence needs medical and community support alongside.

How long does a craving last?

Usually a matter of minutes, peaking and then fading, whether or not you act on it. Riding out one craving also makes the next one slightly easier, which is how the days accumulate.

What should I say when I want to drink?

"I am stronger than how I feel right now." It concedes the feeling, which makes it believable, and denies it the final say, which is the part you need.

What if I relapse?

A relapse is a setback in a long process, not the end of it. The most useful next step is telling someone quickly rather than carrying it privately, because secrecy is what turns one day into several.
