Your body has been keeping you alive continuously, without instruction, for your entire life. Most of the attention it gets in return is critical, and almost all of that criticism is about how it looks rather than what it does.

These twenty-one affirmations are a correction. They are thanks — for healing, for carrying you, for continuing — and they are useful whether or not you currently like the way your body looks.

Gratitude is easier than acceptance

Body acceptance asks you to feel differently about how you look, which is a big ask on a bad day. Gratitude only asks you to acknowledge function, which is available even when you are unhappy with the mirror.

That makes thanks a good place to start. People often find that a few weeks of noticing what their body does quietly changes how they talk about how it looks — in a way that trying to change the second directly rarely does.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not like my body right now?

Then thank it for something it did rather than something it is. Gratitude for function does not require you to have resolved anything about appearance, which is precisely why it is a usable starting point.

Is body gratitude the same as body positivity?

No. Body positivity asks for a positive judgement; gratitude asks only for acknowledgement. A lot of people who bounce off the first find the second manageable.

Can I thank my body while still wanting to change it?

Yes — one of these lines says exactly that. Care and change are not opposites; contempt just happens to be a poor motivator for either.

What if my body is chronically ill or in pain?

Gratitude does not require pretending the pain is fine. Many people find it easier to thank the parts that are still working, and to keep the affirmations about rest and respect rather than about capability.
